PRESEASON NOTES & OBSERVATIONS

8.21.19

  • Freshman Hank Bachmeier has closed the gap on preseason favorite Chase Cord for the starting quarterback spot at Boise State, which is probably why we haven’t gotten an announcement yet.
  • If you are looking for a starting Georgia receiver, Tyler Simmons is likely locked into a starting role.
  • I’ve had a few emails asking if Gordon taking a majority of snaps is Leach’s way of sending a message to Gubrud with a little over a week before Week 1.  Quite simply, no.  Nothing that I’ve learned about Leach leads me to believe he’s anything but straight forward.
  • Sam Howell seems to be on track to start at UNC.
  • Texas State should announce a starting quarterback by the weekend, and HC Jake Spavital said that Tyler Vitt has recently been running with the 1’s.

8.20.19

  • With Tario Fuller out with a fractured jaw, Zander Horvath will take over as RB1, a spot he was sharing with Fuller in camp.
  • Keep tabs on UCLA WR Jaylen Erwin, a JUCO transfer.  Kelly described him as being the ‘total package’ as a receiver, and Erwin is supposedly one of the three fastest players on the team.  His utilization will be something to monitor.
  • Arkansas WR Deon Stewart was lost to a torn ACL, and now I expect freshmen Trey Knox and Treylon Burks to play significantly in 2019.
  • One interesting note from the Arizona WR depth chart.  Cedric Peterson was the only receiver locked into a top spot.  The other two positions were listed as ‘or’.  Keep Jalen Very on the watchlist.
  • Notre Dame receiver Lawrence Keys could get significant playing time now that Michael Young will be least for about 6 weeks with a broken collarbone.
  • Initially, I forecasted David Bell to get significant playing time at Purdue, which may happen, but fellow true frosh Milton Wright seems closer to becoming a Week 1 starter.
  • I feel even stronger now than I did in May that Kenneth Gainwell and Kylan Watkins will contribute significantly in Memphis’ offense this year.

8.19.19

  • The next few days will likely provide us some valuable information, but none may be more important right now than the quarterback update at Washington State.  Mike Leach said that if the season started today, Anthony Gordon would be the starting quarterback.  I suggest getting Gordon if you already own Gubrud.  Also, if you are light at QB, now would be the time to add Gordon.

8.16.19

  • I still feel that Spencer Sanders and Gage Gubrud will ultimately be named the starters at Oklahoma State and Washington State, but recent reports do make me a tad nervous.  I’v said for some time now, if you get Sanders, it would be wise add Brown.  I’m feeling the same with Gubrud after the last two practice reports.  If you draft Gubrud, it would be wise to add Gordon.
  • With so much attention on the receiver situation at Colorado Statre, we may be losing focus on the RB battle, where Marcus McElroy seems to have a slight edge to be the starter.
  • With Chase Cord working his way back to full health, it would not shock me to see him named the Broncos starter for their season opener against Florida State.

8.15.19

  • If you are interest in the 1st-team WR setup at Ole Miss, it seems like Miles Battle and Bryalon Sanders on the outside, with Elijah Moore in the slot.  RB D’Vaughn Pennamon has been moved to TE, where he is running with the 3rd team.Freshman RB Jerion Ealy was also running with the 3rd-team.
  • I read an article yesterday that Colorado State HC Mike Bobo said QB Collin Hill and WR Warren Jackson were taking charge of the offense.  Good signs for our Warren Jackson projections.
  • The TCU QB race seems to have narrowed down to Alex Delton (our preseason pick) and Max Duggan.
  • West Virginia seems to be using Kennedy McKoy in wildcat packages, but I am concerned about RB rotation early on in the year.  If there is the threat of rotation, it helps to know that McKoy could get the premium touches in SY and GL situations.
  • All signs continue to suggest Carson Strong will start at Nevada.  Solano is out with a broken hand and Malik Henry has been dealing with a hamstring injury.
  • Reports out of UNLV suggest that Randal Grimes (6-foot-4 and 215 pounds) could be the team’s top target in 2019.
  • Receivers Binjimen Victor, Chris Olave, and KJ Hill were running with the Buckeyes’ 1st-team offense.  Currently, Austin Mack is out nursing an injury.
  • Add Colorado freshman RB Jaren Mangham to your watchlist.  Not only is he making a case to see the field this season, but he’s still in the mix for a spot on the two-deep.

8.13.19

  • With Texas A&M TE Baylor Cupp most likely out for. the season, expect Jalen Wydermyer and Glenn Beal to fill the void.
  • WVU RB Alec Sinkfield has been getting a lot of work in the slot, given the Mountaineers’ depth at running back.
  • Put Georgia Tech slots receiver on your Watch List.  He was making plays in the spring, and quarterback Lucas Johnson described him as ‘electrifying’.
  • O’Shaan Allison has been getting a lot of work with Ohio’s first-team offense, but Julian Ross has been working his way back from injury.  I expect one of these two guys to emerge as the team’s RB1, but would could see some sort of rotation early on, provided both remain healthy.  Ross has shed his red practice jersey and is now a ‘full-go’.
  • Gage Gubrud impressed in Washington State’s first scrimmage, completing 8-of-11 passes for 2 TDs.  Trey Tinsley was 9-of-15 and Anthony Gordon finished 8-of-15.  On Tuesday, Gubrud and Gordon were the only two to take the practice reps.  Seems like Tinsley may have been eliminated from the mix.

8.12.19

  • Bo Nix was seen leading the first unit in the final viewing window of fall camp.  Harold Joiner was seen getting reps at RB, and based on spring observations, could get work at H-back.
  • QB Brady McBride left Memphis and will transfer to Texas State.  Whether he applies for a waiver seeking immediate eligibility, remains to be seen. Texas State coach Jake Spavital mentioned that WR TJ Graham had one of the better camps on the team.
  • If you have been targeting ODU RB Kesean Strong this preseason, keep LaLa Davis on the watchlist.  Also, former Charlotte RB Robert Washington joined the team a week ago, and has impressed in his short time with the team. At QB Stone Smartt has been taking a majority of first-team reps, but Messiah deWeaver is right there with him.  The Monarchs will be looking to use their QBs more in the running game this year.
  • Not sure I’ve found kicker notes significant, but freshman Will Reichard, the nation’s No.1 kicker recruit, will likely win the starting job at Alabama this fall.
  • It may take some time before a true No. 1 workhorse back emerges at Michigan State, if one does at all.  Most Sparty observers feel as if we are going to see a committee approach early in the year.
  • For those in keeper leagues, Memphis QB Connor Adair seems to be the Tigers’ clear No. 2 under center.

8.8.19

Reports out of Nevada suggest that Carson Strong is in the lead for the starting job.  Cristian Solano is expected to miss another 6-7 weeks after undergoing hand surgery and Malik Henry has been limited with an undisclosed injury.  Saturday’s scrimmage could be very telling.

The running back battle at Virginia seems to be a three-man battle right now between PK Kier, Wayne Tualapapa, and Mike Hollins.

8.6.19

Former Mississippi State WR Keith Mixon has joined Western Michigan.  It seems as if Cortez Lewis has withdrawn his commitment to the Broncos and re-entered the transfer portal.  I’ve seen mentions of former Auburn QB Malik Willis playing at Liberty in 2019, however paperwork seeking a waiver for immediate eligibility still had not been filed as of 8.4.19.

8.3.19

Minnesota QB Zack Annexstad will be out indefinitely with a foot injury, so expect Tanner Morgan to open as the Gopher’s Week 1 starter.

Add Boise State freshman RB George Holani to your watchlist.  He earned some reps with the top units this weekend and could push for playing time.

7.29.19

UTEP running back Q. Wadley has been lost for the season with a toe injury, so keep an eye on freshman Deion Hankins.  Hankins is 6-foot and 200 pounds, so he has the frame to carry the load in  the Miners’ offense.  However, you should only be targeting Hankins late in keeper leagues.  I would add him to your watch list heading into the 2019 season.

7.26.19

The July mock draft has been added to the Preseason Fantasy Draft Guide.  Also, there have been some shakeups in the rankings at QB, RB, & WR.  Most of the changes are between the 20-70 range.

7.23.19

Now that media days are underway, preseason practices are about to start.  I expect this page to be updated often throughout the month of August.  This won’t make it on the site’s twitter feed, but the whispers of Washington State freshman RB Jamir Thomas being academically ineligible in the fall are getting louder.

6.20.19

My goal was to start posting information after July 4th, but I will go ahead and kick things off  today.  Earlier, we posted on the site that FAU reinstated quarterback Chris Robison.  In another interesting note, the source that reported Robison’s updated status also suggested that Deondre Francois may not be playing with the Owls in 2019, which was reported earlier in the spring.
